For Jonathan Charles, the Audubon Birds series represents a natural meeting point between heritage craftsmanship and the enduring legacy of natural history illustration. Inspired by the 16th-century Dutch Golden Age-when collectors prized both scientific curiosity and finely crafted interiors-the project reimagines Audubon’s celebrated bird studies as objects of quiet scholarship and beauty. Each of the six prints is housed in a meticulously crafted antique replica frame, drawing on traditional Dutch profiles and finishes to evoke the atmosphere of early cabinets of curiosity, where art, nature and craftsmanship coexisted in refined harmony. Printed on Awagami handmade Japanese paper from the Fujimori family mill in Tokushima, each illustration gains the softness, warmth and material depth of a centuries-old craft tradition, deepening the archival character of the series.
